MR. MARINA IS A FUNDRAISER FOR                                           THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

What is LLS?

THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY (LLS) IS THE WORLD’S LARGEST VOLUNTARY HEALTH ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO FUNDING BLOOD CANCER RESEARCH AND PROVIDING EDUCATION AND PATIENT SERVICES. FOUNDED IN 1949, LLS IS RELENTLESS IN PURSUIT OF THEIR MISSION: CURE LEUKEMIA, LYMPHOMA, HODGKIN’S DISEASE AND MYELOMA, AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. LLS WAS FOUNDED IN 1949 AND HAS 64 CHAPTERS NATIONWIDE.

BLOOD CANCER RESEARCH CAN BE THE GATEWAY TO CURING OTHER CANCERS. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1949, THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY HAS INVESTED MORE THAN $1.3 BILLION IN RESEARCH TO FIND THE CAUSE AND CURE FOR BLOOD CANCERS. THIS RESEARCH HAS LED TO GROUNDBREAKING TREATMENTS – SUCH AS CHEMOTHERAPY, RADIATION AND STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION – THAT ARE VITAL TO TREATING BOTH BLOOD CANCERS AS WELL AS MANY OTHER FORMS OF CANCER AND SERIOUS DISEASES.

What They Do

INVEST IN BLOOD CANCER RESEARCH: LLS HAS INVESTED MORE THAN $1.3 BILLION IN RESEARCH, INCLUDING FUNDING 41 OF 47 FDA APPROVED TREATMENTS SINCE 2017. RESEARCH FUNDED BY LLS HAS LED OR CONTRIBUTED TO SUCH ADVANCES AS CHEMOTHERAPY, BONE MARROW AND STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION AND NEW, TARGETED ORAL THERAPIES SUCH AS GLEEVEC®, RITUXIN®, VELCADE®, THALIDOMID®, REVLIMID®, DACOGEN®, AND VIDAZA®.

PROVIDE CRITICAL INFORMATION AND SUPPORT FOR PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES: IN 2018 ALONE, INFORMATION SPECIALISTS RESPONDED TO NEARLY 20,000 INQUIRIES, CONNECTING WITH PATIENTS AND CAREFIVERS ONE-ON-ONE AND GUIDING THEM TO OUR WIDE ARRAY OF SUPPORT SERVICES.

ADVOCATE FOR ISSUES IMPACTING BLOOD CANCER PATIENTS: MORE THAN 100,000 ADVOCATES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY ACT AS A POWERFUL VOICE FOR CANCER PATIENTS AND SURVIVORS TO INFLUENCE CHANGE AT THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEVEL. THE LLS VOICE IS BEING HEARD BY THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR LEGISLATION TO FUND BLOOD CANCER RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.

Why They Do It

THE NEED IS CRITICAL: MORE THAN 1.2 MILLION PEOPLE ARE LIVING WITH, OR ARE IN REMISSION FROM LEUKEMIA, LYMPHOMA, HODGKIN’S DISEASE AND MYELOMA. APPROXIMATELY EVERY THREE MINUTES, SOMEONE NEW IS DIAGNOSED WITH BLOOD CANCER. APPROXIMATELY EVERY 10 MINUTES, SOMEONE DIES. MORE THAN 33% OF BLOOD CANCER PATIENTS DO NOT SURVIVE FIVE YEARS AFTER DIAGNOSIS. AN AVERAGE OF 3,679 CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS ARE DIAGNOSED WITH LEUKEMIA EACH YEAR.

Dr. Louis DeGennaro, president and chief executive officer of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), thanks our dedicated community of supporters who helped us achieve a record-breaking year of impact for patients, caregivers and their families. Here at LLS, we say proudly "Beating Cancer Is In Our Blood."
